Flat Earth
I don't know what people think it accomplishes to try to convince others that the Earth is flat. That we can't trust the government? People know that already, including those who are sure that it's a globe.
Why would the government try to convince people that the Earth is a globe, if it really is flat? Interesting question. To try to convince people that the Bible isn't true? There are people who believe the Earth is a globe AND they believe in the Bible. In fact, most Christians believe the Earth is a globe.
It doesn't make one bit of difference to our salvation if the Earth is flat or if it is a globe.
People discovered in ancient Greece that the Earth is a globe. The measurements of Aztec astronomical sites indicate they knew the circumference of the Earth's equator. Many of the people who figured out the Earth's measurements had no acquaintance with the Bible, therefore they had no agenda to disprove it.
Why would disconnected nations of people try to promote a lie that the Earth is a globe? Why would they perpetrate that hoax for centuries? Why would they spend enormous wealth over centuries to perpetrate the hoax? What could it possibly accomplish? Absolutely nothing.
Navigators have been finding their way through the seas for centuries using mathematics that is based on the knowledge that the Earth is a globe. Their calculations would not work for a flat Earth model. Longitude does not splay out like the spokes on a wheel.
The fact that the flat Earth theory has reemerged and gained some adherents to it is a big clue that it's a psychological operation that was launched to discredit people who subscribe to conspiracy theories.
A lot of those theories are actually realities, but if a person has paranoid tendencies, they carry their suspicion too far. By doing so, they become illogical and, what is obvious about the shape and geography of the Earth to the general population, is beyond the flat Earther's comprehension.
The way they grasp at sophist arguments to try to prove their case, and their obsession with proving their case, serves to discredit their perspective on political and social and spiritual matters, thus weakening their influence.
One of the most ridiculous examples of Bible scripture I've seen used to support flat Earth delusion is an old copy of the Bible, where the letter s closely resembles the letter f, and the verse shown was 2 Samuel 11:11. It said that David's men were camped in tents on the "flat earth." Look it up. It's talking about David's army being camped in an open field. Do people really expect to be taken seriously when they offer this as proof that the whole Earth is flat?
Some Christian flat Earthers think that the canopy over the Earth is still intact; it is called the firmament in the King James Bible. I don't understand how they believe this, when the Bible says that the Earth was watered with a mist before the Flood. There wasn't rain, hail, or snow. That came as a result of losing the canopy, which consisted of hydrogen and crashed, causing the Flood.
Flat earth theorists like to quote Job 38 in regards to God setting bounds for the sea, so that it no longer flooded the whole Earth. The Bible says in Genesis 8:1 that God sent a strong wind on the Earth that pushed back the waters. That doesn't mean that they were pushed to the edges of the Earth to form an ice wall around it. It refers to the magnetic force of the poles, which people didn't understand until the last few centuries, so God just referred to it as a wind.
Because of the tilt of the Earth, the locations of the poles, no longer protected by the canopy, were now cold enough to freeze water and to keep most of it frozen year round. In this way, water was restrained. Geologists have found evidence that large boulders rolled uphill, away from the equator, toward the poles, supporting this claim.
Some of these people believe that gravity is a hoax, as well, that it doesn't actually exist. Well, maybe they don't think that there is a force that can make people stick to a ball, but wouldn't gravity be necessary for a flat earth model? Otherwise, why doesn't everything that isn't solid rock float off to outer space?
A ridiculous argument that is supposed to prove the Earth is flat is, when a helicopter hovers in the air, if the Earth is a revolving globe, why does it not pass beneath the helicopter? I flunked physics in high school year after year, but even I know that gravity holds it over that one spot. It is thrust that lifts it off the ground, and if the pilot doesn't use the controls to thrust the helicopter forward, it won't break free from the gravitational pull of that location.
The shadow the Earth casts on the moon and when there are eclipses is more evidence that the Earth is a globe. There are other proofs, but when a person is bound by a spirit of delusion, the craziest things make sense to them.
I think a spirit of rejection plays into this, too, as people who sincerely believe the Earth is flat and try to convince others of it cause acquaintances to avoid them, or, at least, not get too close to them emotionally because they don't want to be pulled into that drama. As a result, the flat Earther is manipulated by a spirit of rejection to create more loneliness in their life by their own actions.
There are serious issues that need to be addressed, real threats to society. Trying to convince people that the Earth is flat is a distraction and a waste of time, and people aren't likely to listen to a flat Earther when they are actually right about something.
The most harmful outcome of this obsession to a Christian flat Earther is they are not likely to be taken seriously when they try to share the Gospel to get souls saved. When the other person learns that this Christian thinks the Earth is flat, it makes it easier dismiss them as a superstitious nut and tune out the treasure of salvation that they are trying to share.
There are people on the Internet, posting about flat Earth and inserting it into their teaching on other topics, who don't believe a word of it themselves.
They are disinformation agents. They usually have military training/programming and get paid to tell lies. Some truth, some lies, to confuse people and discredit those who are listening to the legitimate whistle blowers and figuring out some things based on what they have learned.
The disinformation agents think that the people who believe the nonsense part of their narrative are gullible fools. There is a spiritual cause behind the delusions, wounds of betrayal that have not been healed. The person is wound up too tight.
We need to relax and trust God, and be willing to let go of faulty logic and flawed beliefs. We need to forgive people who have betrayed and wounded us, to yield that to Jesus who is so eager to heal us.
Being sucked in doesn't mean that we're a failure as a human being. It means we're human beings. It doesn't mean we're stupid. Eve had full brain capacity, far more than modern man, and she was deceived, too.
There is nobody who has totally correct thinking, except for Jesus Christ Himself, and He redeems even our mistakes, when we are willing to acknowledge them.
As for those who sow lies to trick people into believing the Earth is flat, they're really messed up. Their thinking certainly isn't all correct. They've gone off into a direction of sinning that is particularly sneaky, but Jesus loves them and wants to redeem them, too.
He will receive them, if they repent. Repentance is a change of mind and heart that leads to a change of behaviour, not simply feelings of regret or remorse. When repentance is real, guilt and shame loses its hold because we know we've been cleansed, that Jesus has removed our sins from us as far as the east is from the west.
Being set free from sin is what is important about that verse in Psalm 103:12; not whether it's east and west on a flat Earth map or on a globe.
Your word have I hid in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
[Psalm 119:11]
